Protect your computer during Hurricane Season!

As a Computer Consultant, I see many disasters waiting to happen with my clients equipment and data before, during and after hurricane season. Without taking some necessary precautions, all your precious files could literally be gone with the wind.

I have seen grown men reduced to tears because they put all their eggs in one basket; then the basket disappears. With the advent of todays large hard drives, it's easy to store all your pictures, movies, music, documents, financial data etc. all on the hard drive of your PC or Mac computer. If the hard drive should fail, you'll lose all your data. Since the hard drive is the only moving part of a PC or Mac computer, it's usually the first part to fail. The old saying "it's not if, but when" is fully applicable here.

Thankfully there are a number of ways to protect all your files, and it can all be done automatically and you don't have to remember to do it yourself. Two great automatic online backup applications that work on a Mac or PC are Carbonite and DropBox. These programs back up your pictures and documents as well as your iTunes library and store them offline in the cloud. This means your data is stored on the companies computer storage and can be sent and retrieved over the internet. You simply tell the program what to backup, and it constantly backs up those specific folders. Restoring lost files is equally as simple.

Of course you can also buy an external USB hard drive, and use the backup software that comes with it. This backup software is very easy to setup and you can store the USB drive offsite in a PO Box, storage unit, safe deposit box, Mail it to a Snowbird etc., away from harms way.
